Local Explorations

The summer months are an ideal way to teach children about science and nature. Spend time exploring the fascinating world of insects, from bees and ladybugs to fireflies and grasshoppers, by going on an insect hunt. There are several wonderful local spots where you and your junior entomologist can identify and learn more about insects:

Print out our gorgeous Insect Guide and take it with you on all of your buggy adventures! And remember, any time you go on a nature exploration it’s a good idea to discuss the importance of:

  • Being respectful of our environment
  • Handling organisms carefull and gently
  • Returning things back to their natural habitat

COMPLETE THE BEE

Back at home, practice looking for tiny details in objects – a practical skill needed for all good naturalists. Print out Complete the Bee, offer crayon rocks, and invite your child to draw the missing half of the bee. It’s not as easy as you think!
